As I hinted in the Forum post I am not completely out and work on other projects which will not consume that much time. Well, here comes the first try
Many GNU/Linux enthusiasts had contact with with the Slackware GNU/Linux distro and appreciate it's clear structure. Slackware follows the Unix and KISS principles very strictly.
Slackware is the oldest surviving and still maintained GNU/Linux distro out there. For experienced GNU/Linux users Slackware is very simple to administrate. That's why many GNU/Linux users prefer the simplicity of Slackware over GUI driven configuration wizards
Unfortunately Slackware does not have a clear policy about what software can be included, and nonfree blobs are included in Linux, the kernel.
There are sevceral fully free distros which are based on popular GNU/Linux Distros, for example Trisquel, which is based on Ubuntu, BLAG is based on RedHat/Fedora and Parabola GNU/Linux is based on Arch. But curiously there is no fully free Slackware equivalent.
For this reason I've created the “slack-n-free” repo. It is not a complete distro. As for now there are builds of the Linux-Libre kernel available, tracking Slackware kernel builds with version numbers corresponding to Slackwares.
You can find the repo at
The usual “generic” and “huge” kernel builds are available vor i686 (32 bit) and amd64 (x86_64, 64) bit.
Depending on future interest there may be additionally and liberated packages available for Slackware later.
Hint: The binary packages are signed with my GPG key. You can download my public key at http://www.connochaetos.org/slack-n-free/key.asc.
ConnochaetOS will cease to exist. The reasons for this decision is my lack of time, the serious financial situation of the project and that the plans for the development of ConnochaetOS as a FSF endosed distro didn't work out. More detailed informations are in the Forum announcement
For ConnochaetOS users, I make the following recommendations:
If you want a distro for old and/or weak computers have a look at Antix and Crunchbang. Both are based on Debian and therefore are following the Debian Free Software Guidelines (DFSG) so they are freedom rescpecting.
If you are looking for an FSF endorsed distro try Parabola GNU/Linux. They take freedom very seriously and update the packages often and quickly, so security issues will likely be fixed quickly. Of course you have to deal with the drawbacks of a rolling release distro
I am announcing the release of ConnochaetOS 0.9.1. This is a maintenance release. The ConnochaetOS 0.9.0 ISO was downloaded 20,000 times. The Free Software Foundation examined every package very closely and said, that we meet the FSF' criteria at this point. So we consider that the ConnochaetOS project is a success.
Since the 0.9.0 release many bugs were fixed. The default kernel was upgraded to Linux-Libre 22.214.171.124 and many other packages were upgraded and we released many security fixes.
ConnochaetOS 0.9.1 provides:
Optional are available:
and many other packages.
ConnochaetOS is a libre GNU/Linux distribution which follows the “Guidelines for Free System Distributions”. See http://www.gnu.org/distros/free-system-distribution-guidelines.html for more information.
You can get the ISO at http://downloads.sourceforge.net/connochaetos/connos-0.9.1.iso md5sum
ConnochaetOS is a free operating system for the desktop with old computers in mind but with modern lightweight software.
The name ConnochaetOS derives from “Connochaetes”, the scientific name for “Gnu”.
We decided to base ConnochaetOS on Arch Linux, but completely rebuild, since we want to support i586, and replace some packages with our own ones, because of footprint, stability or freedom.
Any help is wanted and welcome. For more Information have a look at the forum
